The Medical Examiner’s Office has completed an autopsy of a man who apparently drowned in Green Lake in Ellsworth Wednesday afternoon. Ellsworth Police Chief Chris Coleman tells Star 97.7, they’re awaiting test results before they determine the cause of 53 year old Richard Garland of Ellsworth’s death. Garland was swimming at a private family beach off Lakewood Way at around 2:30pm when he dove under water about 15 feet from shore and didn’t resurface, according to witnesses. Those nearby recovered Garland and started to perform CPR and called for help. Emergency services arrived on scene but were unable to revive him. Coleman says he believes Garland had health problems.
The Bangor Daily News reports Garland was physically disabled and used crutches and a wheelchair to get around. Police say they found crutches at the bottom of the lake just off the dock near where Garland’s body was spotted.
