Meth lab discovered in Jeep in Bar Harbor

From the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency:
Bar Harbor, December 9, 2015– As part of a joint investigation initiated by the Bar Harbor Police Department and MDEA’s Downeast District Task Force, a search warrant was executed yesterday morning on a vehicle. Evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing was discovered and as a result two individuals have been charged.
On December 7, 2015, the Bar Harbor Police Department received information which led them to believe that individuals were attempting to acquire materials commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine. As part of this investigation, officers located a Jeep Liberty in Bar Harbor which they believed was operated/occupied by the individuals who were attempting to acquire the pre-cursor materials.
Bar Harbor officers located Zachary Rand hiding in the backseat of the vehicle in question. They also detained Joseph Schaefer, who was located in the immediate area of the Jeep. Subsequently, both Rand and Schaefer were taken into custody by the Bar Harbor Police Department. Rand was arrested on outstanding arrest warrants and Schaefer was charged with violations of conditions of release based on evidence discovered during Bar Harbor PD’s contact with him.
In addition, Bar Harbor officers developed information which led them to believe that there was likely evidence of a methamphetamine manufacturing operation within the Jeep Liberty. They immediately notified MDEA of their discovery, and investigators assigned to the MDEA Down East task force in Ellsworth responded.

When they arrived, MDEA investigators secured the vehicle and had it towed to a safe location where it was held pending application of a warrant to search the vehicle. Yesterday morning, the search warrant was obtained and executed by members of MDEA’s clandestine lab team. During the search of the vehicle, a significant amount of evidence consistent with that used to manufacture methamphetamine using the “one-pot” or “shake and bake” method was discovered and seized. Also discovered and seized was approximately 1 gram of methamphetamine in its consumable form.
Charged thus far as part of the methamphetamine manufacturing investigation are the following:
1. Zachary Rand, 25 YOA of Southwest Harbor. Charged with Class A, Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (methamphetamine). This charge was aggravated due to a prior drug conviction
2. Joseph Schaefer, 23 YOA of Otter Creek, Charged with Felony , Class B Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (methamphetamine)
Both are currently being held at the Hancock County Jail pending bail. Mug shots may be obtained from the jail.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection assisted the Bar Harbor Police Department and the MDEA during the execution of the search warrant.
