From the Maine Warden Service:
A 57-year-old Alton man died yesterday after capsizing his canoe. Paul Malicky from Dolliff Road in Alton had gone out into a farm pond shortly after noon to tend his bait fish traps. As he returned to shore at about 1:00 PM, he apparently fell when exiting his canoe. Malicky’s wife Lynn called neighbors and 911 for help but by the time assistance arrived Malicky drifted from shore and had gone underwater.
Units from Old Town, Orono, and Alton Fire Departments responded along with several Maine game wardens. A search of the pond was conducted immediately. At 4:28 PM, Maine Warden Service divers recovered the body of Paul Malicky in nine feet of water. This case remains under investigation.
Malicky owned Northland Guide Service and was a Registered Maine Hunting and Fishing Guide, carpenter in the off season and a volunteer fireman, according to his business website .
