From the Washington County Sheriff’s Department:
“On July 14, 2017 at approximately 6:32am the WCRCC received a 911 call to report a head on collision on Rt 1 in Jonesboro near the Blue Bird Ranch. The caller reported a dump truck and a car were involved in a head on crash with two people injured, one seriously and trapped in the car. The WCRCC dispatched Police units, area fire departments and an ambulance o the scene.
Deputies and Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle units arrived on scene and early indications through investigation and witnesses that Luis Figueroa, 41 of Milbridge was traveling East on rt. 1 and collided with Dennis Smith, 65 of Jonesboro who was traveling West on Rt. 1.
Figueroa was operating a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and according to witnesses was making a pass and collided with Smith who was operating a 1994 Ford Dump truck. The Jaws of life were used to extract Figueroa and he was transported to Down East Community Hospital with serious injuries, then later transported by Life Flight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Smith was transported to Down East Community Hospital for complaint of pain.
Deputies and State Police had that Portion of Rt. 1 closed down while investigating the crash, which is still under investigation to try to determine the cause and contributing factors.
